Growing Up Alone: Children & Conflict

Description:

Conflict

In the 1990s, one million children were separated from their families because of war. For many others living in conflict zones, the fear of being alone, the threat of losing their parents or being abducted, is as great as the fear of children who are alone.

HIV/AIDS

Worldwide 13 million children will be orphaned by HIV/AIDS by the end of 2000. For every orphaned child, there is another boy or girl growing up alone because of the stigma and shame surrounding HIV/AIDS.

Poverty

Thousands of children are thrown into institutions or eke out a living on the streets because their families are too poor to keep them. Worldwide over one billion people live in poverty, the majority women and children. "
