Coping with 1997

Description: "What does the looming transfer of power to the People's Republic of China mean for the people of Hong kong? Should Britain expect a new flood of refugees?
In this detailed study, based on fieldwork in Hong Kong, a team of researchers has examined the relevant nationality law provisions to show how Britain has been seeking to protect itself against any fall out from Hong Kong. They provide new evidence about how residents of Hong Kong have lost trust in Britain's promises and begun to look elsewhere. Their economic analysis demonstrates that it is becoming less and less attractive for the people of Hong Kong to turn to Britain for a secure prosperous future - but this does not mean that there are no potential implications to the handover of power."
