Interim Arrangements for Asylum Seeker Support: Guidance note to local authorities in England and Wales

Description: "This guidance explains the implications of the new statutory interim arrangements for providing accommodation and support for asylum seekers with effect from 6 December 1999.

It covers both those asylum seekers who are supported by social services departments and those who are eligible for assistance under Part VII of the Housing Act 1996 (the homelessness legislation).

It advises local authorities of (a) the statutory basis for the provision of services to asylum seekers and (b) the detailed arrangements
supporting the introduction of an interim scheme for asylum seeker support due to take effect from the 6 December 1999.

Relevant legislation is:

- the Asylum Support (Interim Provisions) Regulations 1999 (SI 1999 No 3056)
(“the 1999 Regulations”),

- the Housing Accommodation (Persons subject to Immigration control) (Amendment) (England) Order 1999 (SI 1999 No 3057), and

- the Homelessness (Asylum-Seekers) (Interim Period) (England) Order 1999 (SI
1999 No 3126) (“the 1999 Order”)."
