Statutory codes of practice on the duty to promote race equality:
CRE guides for further and higher education, public authorities and schools - consultation documents

Description: "The Race Relations Act 1976 as amended by the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000

– the Act – gives public authorities a general duty to promote race equality. Set out in section 71(1) of the Race Relations Act 1976, the duty applies to all the public authorities listed in schedule 1A to the Act, and in appendix 1 of the draft Statutory Code of Practice on the Duty to Promote Race Equality.

Many of these authorities are providers of major public services, like health, education, local government and the police. Some (for
example, broadcasting authorities or professional bodies such as the Royal College of Surgeons) are bound by the duty only so far as their public service functions are concerned.

In the context of the Act and the code of practice, the term ‘functions’ means the full range of a public authority’s duties and powers.

Under the duty, when they carry out their functions, public authorities must aim to:

eliminate unlawful racial discrimination;

promote equality of opportunity; and

promote good relations between people of different racial groups."
