A Workbook for Community Planning: Helping communities work together to help newcomers

Description: "This workbook is designed for communities that regularly receive immigrants and refugees from other countries (newcomers). Organizations that serve newcomers as they arrive and start to settle in a community -- such as municipal governments, school districts, non-profit community agencies, recreation centres, health departments and employment centres, together with the agencies who provide direct settlement services -- are key to helping newcomers settle effectively. If a community takes early strategic actions, these actions can make an immeasurable difference to a newcomer's initial settlement in Canada and greatly reduce the human cost to individual newcomers and their families. They will also decrease the greater costs to society, not only in terms of providing language training, social assistance or other support services, but also in the sense of creating a community for new immigrants.
