Accommodation centre locations

[01 February 2002] Home Office

Eight potential sites for Accommodation Centres to house asylum seekers have recently been announced.

The 8 sites currently under consideration are potential sites and no decision has yet been taken on the final sites. The following have been identified as potential sites:

QinetiQ (formerly DEFRA) Pershore, Wychavon, Worcestershire

RAF Hemswell, West Lindsey, Lincolnshire

Sully Hospital, Cardiff

Hooton Park, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire

Land vacated by MOD Logistics, Bicester, Oxfordshire

Air West Edinburgh (formerly RAF Turnhouse), Edinburgh

RAF Newton, West Bridgeford, Nottinghamshire

National Energy Site Killinghome, Grimsby, North Lincolnshire

The sites identified are potential sites. Their identification at this stage does not mean they will automatically be used for an accommodation centre. We expect further suitable sites may emerge during the procurement process.

The Home Office intends to invite suppliers to compete for the business of building or refurbishing the centres and for running them. Responses may be in respect of the identified sites or with ready made solutions involving sites of which we are not currently aware.

Officials will now begin a process of dialogue with site owners and local planning authorities. Public meetings will take place over the coming weeks. Local residents will be able to raise any concerns at those meetings
