Dover Induction Centre Opens
Home Office News Release
22/01/2002
An Induction Centre for asylum applicants opened in Dover yesterday.
The centre, which will be run jointly by the Home Office and the voluntary sector, will accommodate new applicants for two to ten days, enabling screening and health checks, and building on existing processes in the asylum system.
Home Office Minister Jeff Rooker said:
"We want to remove the widespread need for the use of emergency bed and breakfast accommodation for asylum seekers when they enter this country.
Induction Centres will enable asylum seekers to have their immediate health needs attended to and ensure that they have an understanding of their rights - and their responsibilities - while they are awaiting a decision on their application."
Procedures within the centre in Dover will be streamlined to ensure a more rapid dispersal of asylum seekers to designated areas outside of the South-East.
A new system for asylum seekers was outlined by the Home Secretary in October:
§ Induction Centres;
§ Accommodation Centres, which subject to successful trialling, will house asylum seekers once they leave induction centres. Full board, education and health facilities will be provided;
§ Removal Centres will house those who are about to be removed from the country.
